What To Do When An Injury First Occurs, And Taking The Rights Steps After Assessing The Injury.

Although it is impossible to prevent every accident or injury from occurring, It is the responsibility of every child care worker to have a plan of action when one does occur. This includes choosing whether or not to alert the medical emergency services, call a child's parent's or administer first aid. Lets take a look at some additional steps on what to do when an injury first occurs.

1.) No matter what the severity of the injury may be, it is necessary for you to remain in control.

2.) Assess the situation and determine whether emergency assistance is needed. Do not leave the child alone at any time.

3.) If it is apparent that the child needs emergency assistance, and you are trained to administer CPR for example, then it is correct to do so.

4.) It is your responsibility to be trained to check for the basics, meaning an open airway, Breathing, and circulation- THESE ARE THE BASIC CONCERNS OF CPR.

5.) To Check for an open airway, roll the child onto his or her back. Tilt the head back with your hand on the child's forehead and push downward. Place your other hand on the child's chin and lift upward.

6.) To check for breathing, watch the child's chest move up and down, while listening and feeling for air to exit his or her lungs.

7.) To check for circulation, feel for a pulse. For an infant, feel on the inside of the upper arm; for a child, feel along the large  artery on the neck.

After assessing a child's injuries to the best of your ability, you will be able to take further measures by notifying the correct party or parties. Knowing which party or parties to call depends on the severity of the injury or emergency. The following section will assist you in distinguishing between extreme emergencies and incidents requiring basics first aid care, and will help you to make smart decisions when injuries occur.
